Design for Shanghai Fashion Week showroom and shop display.
This motif becomes the genesis of a “stream” of material, flowing organically through the space.
This installation transforms the essence of the necklace collection into a dynamic, immersive experience. It’s a poetic exploration of fluidity, transformation, and ethereal beauty, translating the delicate, flowing texture of your necklaces into a captivating visual narrative within the showroom.

My project centers on the transformation of the traditional Maneki-neko, or “lucky cat,” into abstract forms that explore the intersection of superstition, cultural symbolism, and psychological comfort. Inspired by personal connections to the Maneki-neko and its role in providing emotional reassurance, the project investigates how abstracting familiar symbols can retain their ability to evoke belief and reduce anxiety.

Chinese culture deeply values traditions rooted in Shushu (Chinese metaphysics), divination, and fortune-telling, which remain popular among the Chinese population. modern society. Practices like consulting the lunar calendar for auspicious dates remain integral to decision-making, reflecting how superstition blends with daily life. The fact that people believe these practices can guarantee promising results often fuels a psychological attachment to such practices. The absence of such practices can potentially result in heightened levels of stress and anxiety.
As a young Chinese, I have grown up with these customs. While aware of the lack of scientific basis for these customs, I, like many of my peers, still turn to them for emotional comfort amidst life’s uncertainties. Modern life exacerbates anxiety, particularly among younger generations, who find it harder to recover from stress.
Despite technological advancements, people often rely on rituals or symbolic objects to cope with emotional distress. Superstitious acts, such as performing a ritual before an important event, provide psychological comfort and a sense of preparedness.

Through a creative process involving 3D scanning, digital manipulation, and material experimentation, I aim to abstracting and modernising the traditional appearance of the lucky cat, the ‘Maneki-Neko’ by changing its shape. Objects can acquire symbolic power through agency, they are seen as subjects with cultural influence and psychological effect on people. Even deformed by design, abstracted lucky objects, such as lucky cats, still carry their original symbolic effects, offering equivalent psychological influences as the pre-abstracted objects.
The symbolic value of an object does not necessarily depend on the concrete presentation of its physical form, but more on its agentic significance in culture

By 3D scanning the Maneki-Neko from my home. By choosing this specific Maneki-neko, I incorporated a personal connection into the project, grounding my exploration in an object that holds both cultural and sentimental significance. From concrete to abstract forms through the 3d modelling technique of reverse-expanded form technique, exploring how these objects can give a sense of ritual in daily life and help users gaining emotional comfort.

Grotesque Beauty
The grotesque is producing responses that range from carnal attraction to disgust, is intoxicating and anxiety-inducing. It makes people feel unsettled but that’s why they are attractive.
Sometimes I see beauty in things that other people find strange or are even repulsed by. I become fascinated when there is something you do not want to see and the feeling you get when you do not want to look at something, yet you still do. My jewellery deals with the tension that lies between attraction and repulsion.

In my exploration of the tension between attraction and repulsion, my jewellery challenges conventional notions of beauty. Drawing inspiration from trypophobia and the grotesque, I delve into textures and movements that evoke discomfort, such as worms and barnacles, transforming these elements into a new aesthetic.

People love expensive luxury and to follow the mainstream. The definition of beauty in traditional society has always been noble to lowly. However, does expensive mean beautiful?
This is a subversion of the ideology of taste, a celebration of grotesque aesthetic.
Inspired by Trypophobia, researching texture and movement, which people generally find disgusting, such as worms and barnacles, reinterpreted and translated it into a new aesthetic of contemporary fashion using variations on colour. By deconstructing and reshaping these disgusting elements are combined into expensive and beautiful materials.
What if I take elements of the grotesque and express them in a luxurious way? Should the piece be classified as disgusting or beautiful? From a distance it looks appealingly golden, but as you get closer you realise it’s a collection of gross element.
By reinterpreting these unsettling forms with luxurious materials and rich colour variations, I subvert traditional ideals of beauty and luxury. The result is a collection that appears opulent from a distance but reveals its provocative, grotesque essence upon closer inspection. Through this juxtaposition, my work questions whether beauty can coexist with the grotesque and invites viewers to reconsider the boundaries of taste and the nature of luxury.

I’ve had the opportunity to present my work internationally, including Shanghai Fashion Week 2021, which strengthened my understanding of market trends and commercial appeal. My design approach combines bold, contemporary forms with refined craftsmanship, creating jewellery that feels both expressive and timeless.

The designer draws inspiration from abstract art, embracing the beauty of a natural, fluid state. We believe that this sense of flow represents her ideal form of artistic expression. In the creation process, human will and control are set aside, allowing the work to take shape freely and intuitively. There is no pre-determined outcome, only a spontaneous and organic expression that captures the first impression of an idea while staying true to its original essence.
